Church History

Vance Church was built in 1897 by a successful Wheeling industrialist, James Nelson Vance, in honor of his parents. Vance Church is a community church composed of believers of varied backgrounds and ages, who have a hunger to know more about Christ and His Word. Ever since our beginning the members of Vance Church have been leaders in the Christian community as well as in the community as a whole. In the past few years we have been blessed by the addition of many younger couples. The Church has benefited from their energy and enthusiasm, while they have benefited from the wisdom and experience of its elder members. This blending of the ages has made Vance Church a strong and caring community of believers where all can find support and encouragement to grow in their knowledge of our Lord and His power.

Vance Church, housed in a beautiful Romanesque church and newly remodeled, is a cornerstone of the Wheeling Christian community. It houses the offices of the U.O.V. Presbytery, the Junior League of Wheeling, Young Life and hosts the meetings of many community organizations. Included in this group are an annual Presbyterian Renewal Conference, Alcoholics Anonymous, Boy Scouts of America and a popular community pre-school.

We are reaching out for God's Kingdom year round. During the summer we have an excellent Vacation Bible School serving area in a fun week -long program. Our Senior High and Middle School Youth Groups are busy with various adventures and activities including, "The Experience", a Sunday worship student just for 6th grade through High School students. Several Bible studies go on throughout the year, each striving to present a warm, loving atmosphere to learn about Christ.

Vance Church maintains a strong commitment to outreach. Besides supporting a missionary in Hong Kong, a foreign medical mission and several under privileged children, we also support the efforts of local organizations, both Christian and secular. This list includes Habitat for Humanity, Laughlin Memorial Chapel (inner-city outreach), King's Daughters (child care), The House of Carpenter (food and clothing pantry), Young Life, Teen Challenge, Health Right (free medical services), Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Wheeling Soup Kitchen, Florence Crittenton Home (services for young mothers in need) and many others.
